We view the treatment of the spine and its many possible disorders as a team effort bringing to bear the expertise of all medical professionals as well as the motivation and compliance of the patient who is seeking a solution to their problem.

Top Doctors

Conservative Treatment:

Bermuda is the best place to live and therefore should have the very best in the treatment of conditions of the spine that are both common and rare.  We are dedicated to providing excellent care and will always start with the most conservative approach first.  Conservative treatment is always the most important first step, and many patients who will visit our physician have already completed some or most conservative options that are currently available.  In such situations, patients may be left with surgery as the last option.

Surgical Treatment:

Dr. Pitt, a Bermudian Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon, has completed advanced training with over 24 years of experience and will provide the very best in spine surgery care for your problem.  With well over 70,000 patients treated and over 6,000 surgeries completed, he has enjoyed a greater than 90% success rate. Dr. Pitt has enjoyed a very good reputation as one of the very best surgeons in Arizona and is now available on a part time basis as a visiting specialist to all Bermudians.

Dr. Pitt is unable to practice full time in Bermuda for a number of reasons.  Due to the complex and ever evolving nature of spine surgery and the fact we have a small population in Bermuda, Dr. Pitt must maintain his skills utilizing the vast array of conditions that is found in a larger population density area. Data from multiple sources shows the number of spine surgeons required to treat a population of 60,000 lives is 0.4 spine surgeons. One spine surgeon is all that is needed to support a population of 120,000 lives (Health Strategies & Solutions, Inc., 2008, Barrows Neurologic Institute, Peer Review 2015,  and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons). Therefore Bermuda can benefit from having a highly trained specialist who is constantly exposed to higher complexity surgical and non-operative cases on a regular basis.

He is currently the spine surgeon specialist consultant for over 3 professional athletic teams in the USA including the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, and Arizona Athletics department for Arizona State University.  He has a wealth of experience in sports related spinal injuries dating back to his training at the University of Southern California.

Surgical options include minimally invasive surgical techniques for laminectomy, fusions, and scoliosis reconstructions.  Other state-of-the-art modern surgery techniques include Artificial Disc Replacement for both the cervical and lumbar spine, Arthroscopic , Endoscopic, or Microscopic surgical techniques, and scoliosis corrective reconstruction for congenital or acquired conditions of the spine.

Many of the minimally invasive surgical procedures will have a small incision, reduced tissue damage, shorter recovery time, limited hospitalization time, shorter surgical time (35 – 70 minute surgical time), and profound reduction in your pain after surgery.  Allow us to help you feel good again quickly!

Your Lifestyle

Your lifestyle is important and returning to your activities of daily living is our prime objective.  There are many spine problems that have a solution while there are others with no solution.  Please call us for a consultation, and allow us to help you feel good again, serving the needs of all who call Bermuda home.

Humanitarian Efforts

It is important to share with others the gifts that God has given to us and to provide the same level of care to the underserved as we provide to those with resources.  It is because of this commitment that Dr. Pitt and a team of US physicians, technicians, and other ancillary staff provide at no cost their expertise in the treatment of those who’s access to healthcare is marginalized as a result of their lack of resources.

International Surgical Foundation (ISF) was founded by Dr. Pitt in 2010 and has yearly fundraisers aimed at generating the funding needed to continue this vital work.  ISF has been featured in multiple publications and television as noted here.  If you want to volunteer please join us as we work to help others.  Visit us on the Web at www.SurgicalCharity.org.
